A dental crown is an artificial tooth cap that’s permanently fitted on top of an existing root structure, like a dental implant or a natural tooth root.
Unlike a veneer, which only covers the front surface of your tooth, a crown covers the entirety of your tooth above the gum line, where it can restore, reinforce, or replace a tooth that’s damaged, decayed, unsightly, or missing.
Also known as a CEREC crown, a same-day crown is a type of dental restoration that is created while you are in our office using a CEREC milling machine. The crown is fabricated from ceramic for a durable, natural appearance. We can make your crown in a single visit.
While we offer traditional 2-3 visit crowns, which can take up to three weeks to place, the team at Diamond Dental can cap your tooth in just one office visit. First, your dentist uses an intraoral camera and computer-aided design to create a 3D image of your damaged tooth. The impression is used to create your dental crown in our on-site CEREC milling machine, which essentially 3D prints your restoration!
While the CEREC machine is creating your crown, your dentist will prepare your tooth just like they normally would. Your dentist will remove a portion of the enamel so that the crown will fit securely and comfortably, making sure that it looks completely natural once placed.
When your crown is ready, your dentist places the restoration. They will check that the fit is good and finally seal it with a resin that hardens upon exposure to a special light. The whole process can take as little as one hour, depending on the type of restoration you need. As soon as you leave our office, your smile will be just like new!
